Palm Coast-based NEFJA Celebrates Jazz Appreciation Month

In honor of the Jazz Appreciation Month, North East Florida Jazz Association (NEFJA) is bringing in two of New York’s hottest contemporary jazz stars to perform in a special concert on Sunday, April 17th at the Museum of Arts and Sciences in Daytona Beach. Saxophonist Vincent Herring and trumpet player Vincent Pelt are considered to be among the best jazz musicians in the US today.

Herring, 46, has played saxophone since he was 11 years old. He first toured the U.S. and Europe with Lionel Hampton’s Big Band in the early 80’s. He went on to spend nine years working with Nat Adderly, a native Floridian and internationally acclaimed jazz trumpet player, and has also performed with such jazz notables as Dizzy Gillespie, Art Blakey, Freddie Hubbard, Nancy Wilson, Horace Silver, and Wynton Marsalis. A consummate performer, Herring has performed in nearly every major jazz festival in the world. He has recorded 15 CD’s as a leader and has performed as a sideman on more than 200 others.

He is a strong advocate of jazz education and is currently on staff at William Paterson University in New Jersey and has conducted master classes and jazz workshops at Julliard, Duke and Cornell Universities.

Pelt, 34, graduated from the renowned Berklee College of Music in 1988 and has been a key player on the New York jazz scene since then. He has performed with a host of high profile jazz performers including Roy Hargrove, Jimmy Heath, Ravi Coltraine, Cassandra Wilson, Greg Osby and the Mingus Big Band. For five consecutive years Pelt has been voted Rising Star on the Trumpet by Downbeat Magazine and the Jazz Journalist Association. He released his first CD in 2002 and has recorded several other albums. Pelt is currently with High Note Records. His latest CD, “The Talented Mr. Pelt” was released in 2011.

Muriel McCoy, NEFJA President and co-founder says:
“ We are very pleased to be able to present these two fine young musicians in recognition of Jazz Appreciation month and as part of NEFJA’s concert series.  Our mission is to perpetuate jazz, America’s only indigenous art form and these two outstanding musicians are among those who are taking jazz forward into the 21st century. It promises to be an amazing afternoon of music.”

Also in recognition of Jazz Appreciation Month and as a special treat for museum guests and concertgoers, NEFJA has arranged for the Daytona State College Jazz Band to perform prior to the main event.

“NEFJA is committed to encouraging young people to pursue jazz studies,” said McCoy. “In addition to providing scholarships to talented young people enrolled in jazz study programs in Florida colleges and universities, we’re excited to be able to provide a local venue for them to showcase their talents.”

The Daytona State College Jazz Band will be performing from 1:50 - 2:20 p.m. in the Museum’s Root Hall. The Herring-Pelt concert will begin at 2:30p.m. in the Museum’s auditorium. The Museum of Arts and Sciences is located at 352 S. Nova Road, Daytona Beach.

Tickets for the concert are $25 for NEFJA members, $30 for non-members, and $15 for students with valid ID. They can be purchased in advance by mail (P.O. Box 352552, Palm Coast, FL 32135), or at Aimee’s Hallmark in Palm Coast, on the NEFJA website at www.nefja.org or by calling Muriel McCoy at 386-445-1329.

NEFJA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the perpetuation, performance, preservation, and promotion of jazz. In addition to bringing nationally and internationally known jazz performers to the local area, the group awards scholarships to talented young students enrolled in a Jazz studies program at a Florida college or university.

Creating A Great Facebook Page For Your Business Or Organization

The Palm Coast Home Show Facebook Page
Facebook is obviously a huge attraction for individuals to connect and socialize with others.  It has also become a powerful way for businesses and organizations to connect with customers and their communities.  Does it replace your existing website?  I don't agree with that notion.  Rather the Facebook page is an excellent supplement to your existing website allowing you to interact and share with others that is often limited on traditional websites.

So how do you create a Facebook page?  Pretty simple actually:

  1. Click here to register and start building your page
  2. Design and upload your profile image.  Profile images can be 200 x 600 pixels which allows you to create an attractive image with business or organization information.  After uploading your profile image, click the 'Edit Thumbnail' link and select the area of your image you want to display in your 'fan' base's Facebook feed.
  3. Add your business or organization's information including contact information, website link, and an overview of who you are.
  4. Assign your administrators.  You can have multiple administrators for a page which allows several people to contribute and engage visitors.
  5. Tell people about your page.  Once you get 25 'Likes' of your page you can assign a unique username which makes your link www.Facebook.com/username.  The username should be your business or organization's name.
Now your page is built, what do you post there?  This is where you can get creative and have a lot of fun.  Some great things to post on your page are:
  1. Links to your blog posts
  2. Links to relevant news articles (scroll through images to find the most relevant and attractive image to display)
  3. Upload photos/video from company or organization events
  4. Engage visitors by asking questions and input
The Office Divvy Facebook Page
I prefer using Hootsuite which allows for finding content online and easily sharing the information on the Facebook page and/or multiple Twitter accounts at one time.

We have some great local Facebook pages as well for you to 'Like' and keep updated on local happenings.  Here's a few:

Ocala, Daytona Beach... is Palm Coast next for Groupon?

Launched in November 2008, Groupon features a daily deal on the best stuff to do, see, eat, and buy in more than 300+ markets.  This highly successful "Deals Website/Portal" recently announced the addition of Deals in Ocala, FL this week:

Groupon is an easy way to get huge discounts while discovering fun activities in your city. Groupon's daily deals consist of restaurants, spas, massages, theaters, hotels, and a whole lot more, in hundreds of cities across the country.

Groupon is also about to launch in Daytona Beach, and the website's Daytona Beach page is already live:

Groupon's local representative in Volusia County, Phil Rapisardo has an active twitter account under @GrouponPhil, and he's talking about possibilities and launch there:

The agressive expansion and selection of Ocala and Daytona Beach brings up the question: "Is Groupon launching in Palm Coast, FL soon?" -- Indeed, population, demographics, and consumer-purchasing-power-wise Palm Coast, Florida may be a natural next step for Groupon's expansion in Central Florida.

In December 2010, Groupon has reportedly rejected Google’s massive $6 billion acquisition offer and intends to stay independent.   As a hugely successful coupon website, Groupon is said to be considering an initial public offering (IPO) in 2011.  The company is reportedly meeting with securities firms interested in handling the sale, according to various sources on the web.

Groupon's business model, and the power of Collective Buying, at discounts generally greater than 50%, makes it attractive for consumers and businesses alike.  Here's Groupon's pitch to businesses, as to why they should feature their deals through them:

Have you been following Groupon?  Do you subscribe to any deals in any of the cities?  Have you made a purchase?  Please share your opinion in the comments below...

Summer Events and More from Pastor Chris

by Christian Magnell
Pastor, Christ Lutheran Church of Palm Coast, FL
Chaplain, 1-265th Air Defense Artillery, Daytona Beach, FL

Christ Lutheran Church (CLC) is a relatively new church in Flagler County.  It's located on the border of Bunnell and Palm Coast, in the Atlantis Shopping Complex, but we're not a storefront!  We have a stand alone building in back and a vibrant growing congregation of 200+ people.

Established just a few years ago, we've been in our present building for about 2 years.  What you'll experience at CLC is a group of real and authentic people, who come to worship just as they are, to hear Biblically-sound messages in a casual, upbeat format.

We have one service (10am), but we're getting ready to launch a second service this fall to accommodate growth.

The current service is a blend of traditional, upbeat music, and our new service will have a more contemporary praise band sound to it.  If you want to listen to us on the radio, we're on WNZF (1550AM and 106.3FM) every Sunday at 8:30am.  Or check out our Podcast on iTunes.

Here is a couple of unique events this summer:
Monthly Beach Services:
We meet at Varn Park on the second Sunday of the month, at 7am (next one is July 11th).  Varn Park is located on A1A in Painter's Hill, and it can be a little hard to find, but we always have members of the church standing out by the road with the Christ Lutheran Church banner.  The service itself is laid back, with Pastor Chris typically wearing a hawaiian shirts and shorts.  We'll have guitar led music on July 11th, a short sermon and the beauty of the ocean as our background.  All people are welcome to attend.  From Flagler Beach go north on A1A through Beverly Beach into Painter's Hill.  From Palm Coast Parkway go over the toll bridge and then south on A1A.

Vacation Bible School:
This year we chose to hold it a little later in the summer than other churches, so kids in the community could have more options, and our VBS is totally free!  It will take place from July 19th to 23rd, from 6pm-8pm.  We have plenty of space around the church and inside our sanctuary, and the nights will be filled with games, songs, crafts, food and a lot of fun.  That Sunday, July 25th, the kids will be singing in church.  Register online.
